Data Security Constrains Expansion of E-Commerce in Nigeria

Nigeria has been ranked the rising star of Africa's fast-growing e-commerce sector with the economy topping all other African nations by number of Internet users and mobile phone owners. But many Nigerians still think of internet fraud when online transaction is mentioned.

In 2014 ecommerce in Nigeria recorded over $2 million worth of online transactions per week. According mobilemediainfotech, Nigeria’s e-commerce market is developing rapidly, with an estimated growth rate of 25 percent annually.

A study conducted in 2014 showed that 63 per cent of Nigeria’s 50 million internet users had bought at least one item online. Even with this number e-commerce penetration continues to encounter setbacks.

A random survey conducted on the street of Lagos showed that many Nigerians are still skeptical about buying goods online or making payment for goods purchased online.

Majority of the people said they were not comfortable giving out their financial details online because they cannot vouch for the security of such payment gateways. Others emphasized the problem of slow internet connection and time wasted trying to open web pages to view various products.

Bisi Oladele, a lawyer based in Lagos said she goes online to check for prices of items she intends to buy but prefers to walk into a supermarket or shop to buy the products she desires. She said her decision was based on the fact that she is not comfortable giving out her personal or financial information and the cost of delivering items is high.

She also touted Yahoo’s capabilities as a mobile company and its focus to “inform, connect and entertain” its users.

Beyonic Announces Partnership with Mobile Accord to Expand Further into Africa

Beyonic, a technology company that aims to eliminate the rampant use of cash in emerging markets, has announced a partnership with Mobile Accord that will make Beyonic the largest mobile money aggregator in Africa.

Beyonic currently operates in Uganda and Kenya, and will leverage Mobile Accord’s expertise in building mobile solutions and relationships with leading mobile carriers to bring Beyonic’s platform to 25 additional countries.  Beyonic’s online platform enables businesses to quickly deploy, track and manage 2-way mobile money payments over multiple mobile carriers with one, easy-to-use system.

Mobile money allows those in emerging markets to pay or receive money through even the most basic mobile phones. For NGOs and businesses working in emerging markets, mobile payments enable fast, secure money transfers and reduce losses associated with cash payments.  However, until now, businesses making mobile payments needed to connect individually to every carrier they wanted to send money through, a time-consuming process for organizations that are operating in multiple countries.  Beyonic’s cross-carrier solution allows businesses to manage payments in multiple countries through one intuitive platform.

“For those working in emerging markets, cash payments are riddled with security and logistical issues. Over the past few years, mobile money has become popular both for businesses looking to move away from cash, and for individuals who do not have the means to open traditional bank accounts.  Beyonic’s system allows NGOs and businesses to utilize mobile money for expenses with very little set-up, and we are excited to expand this important tool across Africa” said Luke Kyohere, CEO, Beyonic.

Mauritius Is The Most Competitive Economy In Africa - WEF

Mauritius, a volcanic island nation in the Indian Ocean is the most competitive economy in Africa. According to the World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Report 2015-2016 which assesses the competitiveness landscape of 140 economies. In the world, Mauritius ranks 46.

That makes Mauritius - a nation with less than 2 million population - more competitive than countries like Turkey (51), Vietnam (56) and Mexico (57). As most competivite African economy Mauritius is followed by South Africa, Rwanda, Botswana, Morocco. Striking is the low position of Africa’s giant Nigeria - only 24th in Africa and 124th worldwide.

The decade-long improvement of Mauritius comes to a halt this year with a fall of seven places to 46th. Small improvements in the basic factors for competitiveness—institutions (34th, up one), infrastructure (37th, up five), and higher education (52, up two ) are offset by declines in the efficiency of labor (down by five places to 57th) and the financial market (down by eight places to 34th). Despite this, Mauritius remains sub-Saharan Africa’s most competitive economy, ahead of South Africa in 49th.

It boasts the region’s best infrastructure (37th), most healthy and educated workforce (63rd on health and 52nd in higher education and training), and most efficient goods market (25th). Institutions are a further asset (34th). However, as the country transitions moves up the development ladder, more needs to be done to unlock the areas of competitiveness conducive to a knowledge-driven economy: higher education, especially its quality; the use of ICTs and ability to absorb new technologies (65th), where it has steadily declined over the past decade; the capacity to innovate, about which business leaders are particularly concerned; and an inadequately educated workforce.

South Africa climbs seven places to reach 49th, reversing its four-year downward trend thanks largely to increased uptake of ICTs—especially higher Internet bandwidth—and improvements in innovation (up by five places to 38th), which establish the economy as the region’s most innovative. South Africa also hosts the continent’s most efficient financial market (12th) and benefits from a sound goods market (38th), which is driven by strong domestic competition (28th) and an efficient transport infrastructure (29th).

Independence Day - Shapers of today’s Nigeria on Twitter

October 1st 2015 marks the 55th Independence Day in Nigeria and Nigerians all around the world proudly celebrate Nigerian heritage on this day.  Nigeria gained independence on October 1st 1960.  Popular Twitter Hashtags such #October1st and #NigerianIndependence are used by Nigerians to commemorate the day together via social media, sharing facts and fondly remembering key moments in history.  Twitter is also used to promote Independence Day events and celebrations that people can attend physically.

Many Nigerians have played a key part in shaping the face of Nigeria and here some well-known Nigerians who have impacted the country in some way and given Nigeria a positive image.

·         @MBuhari is the current and 7th president of Nigeria.  He has been a prominent politician since the 1940s and has remained a popular face within politics for several generations.

·         @Kunleafolayan is a Nigerian actor and film director who directed the well-known Independence Day film that came out last year ‘October 1st’.  He is revered media personality, who has boosted the image of Nigeria to the rest of the world, through The Arts.

Kentebe meets Shell, Oando, Others to Discuss Nigerian Content and Wealth Creation

Over the last five years, the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act (NOGICDA) has arguably been the single most impactful piece of legislation for the Nigerian oil and gas industry since the Petroleum Act of 1969. The NOGICDA prescribes that indigenous operators be given first consideration in the awarding of contracts and licences, first consideration for training and employment opportunities and preference must be given to domestically manufactured goods.

At a time of shifting global energy markets, oil price at its lowest since February 2009 and the high operating costs, the implementation of Nigerian Content is all the more crucial for wealth creation and capital retention for the sustenance and growth of the Nigerian economy. The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Mr Denzil Amagbe Kentebe, who will be addressing the oil and gas industry in October at the Practical Nigerian Content Forum (PNC) in Yenagoa noted:

“The profile of the Nigerian oil and gas industry has gone through greater transformation than seen in previous decades; there are more indigenous players in the industry than ever before, a wider pool of skilled Nigerian professionals and indigenous asset ownership has increased steadily as has the domiciliation of manufacturing and fabrication.”

And indeed the enactment of the NOGICDA added impetus to the local capacity development initiatives some of the multinationals were already undertaking and galvanised others to work towards compliance. In just one year Shell Producing Companies in Nigeria awarded $2.4bn worth of contracts to indigenous companies and Total launched the TOTAL Supplier’s Financing Scheme worth $7.5bl to be made available through Nigerian banks to bridge the gap between local vendors/suppliers and financial institutions.

Beginning its third series, the BBC World News’ Focus On Africa segment will continue to bring reports from across the continent with a fresh perspective.

In this series, Azuike travels across the region to uncover some of Africa’s most compelling stories. He finds out what it really takes to be middle class on the continent and why Zambia may be turning its back on China for a new best friend.

“Filming in Africa is really important to me. Not only is it part of who I am, but meeting the people affected by the topics I cover adds an intensity that I hope will have more impact on the What’s Up Africa audience,” says Azuike. “I've found some important stories from the continent and I'm really looking forward to sharing them with the viewers.”

What’s up Africa, which has been nominated for an AIB - International Media Excellence Award in the category of specialist programme, has already received over 1.5 million views online and is now making its content more appealing to its mostly young digitally-savvy audience. By airing two 90-second episodes a week – on Wednesdays and Fridays - instead of one longer piece, the new series of What’s Up Africa will be more clickable and shareable on social media.

In reports airing on Wednesdays, Azuike hangs out with contestants at an HIV positive beauty pageant in Kampala. He also finds out where the world’s luckiest men live. On Fridays, the show will be dedicated to bringing audiences satirical news round-ups from the week in Africa in 90 Seconds.

Nigeria: PPPFM refutes report on domestic transportation of crude oil contract

Nigeria’s pioneer Marine Transport and Logistics Company, PPP Fluid Mechanics Limited (PPPFM), has denied allegations of illegality in its dealings with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

In a statement released by the PPPFM and signed by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kunle Oyelakun, in response to a publication by an online newspaper, accusing PPPFM of under-hand dealings in the transportation of crude oil to the Warri and Port Harcourt refineries, as well as providing security services, stressed that all the allegations were wrong and backed up by no facts what so ever.

According to Oyelakun, “contrary to the publication, our companies wish to state that the contracts awarded them by NNPC followed due process and complied with the relevant extant provisions of the Public Procurement Act.  We state  unequivocally that there is nothing illegal in respect of the security  contract awarded to OMS and the movement of crude oil by marine vessels contract awarded to PPPFM from inception to date.”

He added that, before the award of these contracts, following a detailed study and analysis by NNPC management, a report indicated that it became uneconomical to transport crude oil from Escravos to Warri refinery through the pipeline in view of Government’s huge expenditure of about $121 million for the maintenance and repairs of the Escravos-Warri broken crude oil pipeline.

Furthermore, Oyelakun stated that the report also indicated an estimated 40 percent loss of crude oil pumped through the Escravos-Warri pipelines due  to persistent pipeline vandalisation and oil theft.

“Besides the specific losses stated above, it is public knowledge that  the Warri and Kaduna refineries before the engagement of PPPFM had been shut down for about 48 months due to lack of supply of crude oil feedstock to make the refineries functional.  For the avoidance of doubt, these facts are also verifiable in the records of NNPC.

Sterling Bank Unveils MSME Academy

In line with its aim of strengthening capacity among operators of small businesses in the country, Sterling Bank Plc has introduced the Sterling micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME).

The bank also said the institute would help tackle the challenge of funding for MSMEs in Nigeria.

The academy, which will commence with a pilot session in Lagos on September 30, is a result of a partnership with BusinessDay.

The bank said the initiative was also part of value-added offering for its SUPA Business Account.

Executive Director, Sterling Bank, Mr. Abubakar Suleiman
Speaking at an event in Lagos to unveil the academy, Executive Director, Sterling Bank, Mr. Abubakar Suleiman said: “The overall problem we are trying to deal with here is that everybody is talking about SMEs and people still think that if you throw money at SMEs, everything will be fine.

“But we know that is not true. The problem of SMEs is not money. We believe that if you fix all the other problems, people will actually come at you with money. This is because, people have money and they are actually looking to get returns on their money.

“The problem is we cannot give them opportunities that they can see transparently and say this will give me a return or I can trust the processes that are leading to these results. In some instances, people will show you business profits and say they are making 20 per cent profit but they cannot show the process that led to this profitability so that it can be comfortably repeated.
