WISCAR and British Deputy High Commission Host Inspiring Book Reading and Advocacy Event

Mentorship can be a turning point for hundreds of women in Nigeria, and WISCAR (Women In Successful Careers) has been just that. This past week, WISCAR, in partnership with the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos, hosted a Book Reading and Advocacy Event that convened university students, Chevening Awards alumni, WISCAR alumnae, and women professionals. The event aimed to ignite dialogue on leadership, mentorship, and the evolving role of women in today’s workplace.

At the heart of the gathering was a reading from the WISCAR Mentoring Book — a curated collection of practical insights and personal reflections from industry leaders, showcasing how mentorship can shape and elevate professional trajectories. Jonny Baxter, the British Deputy High Commissioner, and Amina Oyagbola, WISCAR Founder and Chairperson, opened the event with powerful remarks that framed the day’s conversations.

A major highlight was the panel discussion on Championing Women’s Leadership in the Workplace, which featured influential voices such as Mrs. Toki Mabogunje, Mrs. Lola Esan, and Mrs. Fabia Ogunmekan. Each panelist shared personal reflections on the importance of inclusion, leadership equity, and the enduring value of mentorship. Another standout moment came from the Mentor and Mentee Chat with Ms. Adedoyin Pearse and Ms. Nima Jo-Madugu, offering real-life testimony to the transformative impact of guided mentorship.

Attendees participated in an interactive Q&A session and enjoyed networking opportunities, while three lucky guests received complimentary copies of the WISCAR Mentoring Book.

Since 2008, WISCAR has empowered over 10,000 women through its structured mentoring programs, leadership development, and advocacy efforts. Its flagship one-year mentoring program has guided hundreds of young professionals toward success by providing the tools, networks, and confidence they need to thrive. In a significant next step, WISCAR is preparing to launch a specialised mentoring program tailored for women in law — combining targeted leadership development with strategic networking to help legal professionals excel in their careers.

The WISCAR Mentoring Book is available online at wiscar.ng/mentoring-book and in-store at Roving Heights Bookstores nationwide.
