MTN Foundation sponsors 6,000 eye patients

Through MTN Foundation Eyesight Restoration Intervention Scheme, over 6,000 patients with various eye problems have commenced treatment in Ondo State.

According to a national newspaper in Nigeria, The Punch, beneficiaries have been undergoing free surgical interventions for the removal of cataracts since Monday, while others received free reading glasses for presbyopia.

“These individuals conduct their day-to-day activities with significant difficulty, and the overwhelming majority of them do not have access to proper treatment or facilities.”

“It is for this reason that the MTN Foundation, under its health portfolio, has partnered with Eye Foundation Centre for the Prevention of Blindness to implement the Eyesight Restoration Intervention Scheme tagged the MTN EyeRIS under the Federal Ministry of Health,” the director of the foundation, Mr. Dennis Okoro, was quoted as saying by the publication.

Mr. Okoro said that under the first phase, 33,364 patients in six states of Niger, Sokoto, Jigawa, Abia, Delta and Osun were treated for cataracts and other eye diseases.
