MTN Ghana Slashes Fibre Broadband Prices as Push for Affordable Internet Gains Momentum

MTN Ghana has announced substantial cuts to its fibre broadband tariffs, reducing the cost of several home internet packages as demand grows for more affordable and accessible internet services across the country.

The move, which affects multiple Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) plans, comes amid increasing public concern over the cost of broadband services and follows engagements between the telecommunications operator and the Ghanaian government.

The price reduction has been welcomed by consumers, many of whom have repeatedly called for cheaper internet access as digital services become increasingly integrated into everyday life.

Announcing the development, Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, said the review formed part of wider efforts to make high-quality internet services more accessible to citizens. He explained that the government had engaged MTN after receiving numerous complaints from consumers over broadband pricing.

According to the minister, improving internet affordability remains a national priority as connectivity becomes essential for education, commerce, remote working, entertainment and access to government services. He also suggested that discussions could be extended to other service providers as part of broader efforts to encourage more competitive pricing across the telecommunications industry.

Under the revised pricing structure, MTN’s unlimited 100Mbps fibre package has recorded the biggest reduction. The monthly subscription, previously priced at GH¢987, will now cost GH¢299.

Customers can also subscribe to a 300Mbps unlimited broadband package for GH¢444 per month, while a 500Mbps package will be available at GH¢999 monthly.

The new pricing is expected to ease financial pressure on households and businesses that rely heavily on stable, high-speed internet connectivity. Small and medium-sized enterprises, students, content creators and professionals working remotely are among those likely to benefit most.

The announcement comes as broadband demand continues to surge across Ghana, driven by increased use of video conferencing platforms, streaming services, cloud applications, online education and digital commerce.

Growing dependence on internet connectivity has intensified calls for telecommunications companies to provide better value for consumers.

MTN has spent recent years expanding its fibre infrastructure to meet rising demand. Since launching its fibre broadband service in 2016, the company has continued to extend network coverage and invest in upgrades designed to improve speed, reliability and customer experience.

The company’s internal data underscores the rapid evolution of digital consumption patterns. Average monthly data usage per customer rose to 12.5GB in 2025 from 10.8GB a year earlier, reflecting consumers’ increasing reliance on online services.

As Ghana’s largest telecommunications operator, MTN serves more than 31 million subscribers and commands a significant share of the country’s telecoms market. Its active data customer base approached 20 million users by the end of 2025, further cementing its role in driving Ghana’s digital transformation.

Beyond Ghana, MTN continues to strengthen its broadband presence across Africa. In Nigeria, the company offers FibreX, a range of unlimited broadband services tailored to residential and business customers, highlighting its wider strategy of expanding fixed broadband infrastructure alongside its mobile network operations.

Industry analysts say the latest price cuts could reshape the competitive landscape by accelerating broadband adoption and encouraging rival operators to review their own pricing strategies.

Lower internet costs are widely seen as critical to expanding digital inclusion, stimulating innovation and enabling more citizens to participate fully in the digital economy.
