Toyota has officially entered Kenya’s fast-growing electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of the fully electric Toyota bZ4X SUV, signalling the Japanese automaker’s ambitions to strengthen its presence in East Africa’s evolving mobility sector.
The vehicle was unveiled by CFAO Motors, Toyota’s authorised distributor in Kenya, making it the company’s first fully electric SUV offering in the country.
The launch comes at a time when interest in electric mobility is gaining momentum across Kenya, driven by rising fuel prices, increasing environmental awareness and the gradual expansion of charging infrastructure.
Speaking at the launch, CFAO Mobility Kenya Managing Director Arvinder Reel described the bZ4X as a major milestone in the future of transportation and a reflection of Toyota’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
“The bZ4X represents the next chapter in mobility. With its zero-emissions, impressive range and standard-setting safety features, this innovative SUV ensures our customers don’t have to choose between cutting-edge electric performance and trusted, durable engineering,” Reel said.
The launch also supports Toyota’s global “Beyond Zero” strategy, which centres on developing low and zero-emission mobility solutions while preserving the brand’s longstanding reputation for reliability and durability.
The Toyota bZ4X is powered by a 73.1kWh lithium-ion battery that delivers a driving range of up to 516 kilometres on a single charge, depending on road conditions and driving habits.
The electric SUV generates 215 horsepower and 337Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just over five seconds. Power is delivered through a single-speed eAxle transmission engineered for smooth and quiet driving.
Toyota has also focused on reducing charging concerns among prospective buyers. Using a 150kW DC fast charger, the battery can be recharged from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in approximately 30 minutes.
To further reassure customers, the company is offering an eight-year or 120,000-kilometre battery warranty.
Built on Toyota’s dedicated e-TNGA electric vehicle platform, the bZ4X places its battery beneath the vehicle floor, lowering its centre of gravity while improving stability, handling and interior space.
The SUV features a ground clearance of 213mm, making it suitable for urban commuting as well as rougher terrains common across parts of Kenya.
Its off-road capabilities are supported by Multi-Terrain Select, X-Mode and Downhill Assist Control systems designed to enhance traction and performance on difficult surfaces.
The vehicle also offers a water-wading depth of 500mm and comes fitted with 20-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the bZ4X offers a spacious cabin equipped with synthetic leather seats, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof and a 12.3-inch infotainment display.
Safety remains a central feature, with Toyota Safety Sense integrating pre-collision systems, lane-keeping assistance, electronic stability control and multiple airbags.
Toyota’s entry into Kenya’s electric vehicle market reflects a broader transition towards sustainable transportation across the country.
Although electric motorcycles and three-wheelers currently account for a significant share of adoption, passenger EVs are becoming increasingly visible in major urban centres, including Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.
With charging infrastructure continuing to expand and consumer confidence in electric vehicles growing, Toyota is positioning itself to compete in one of East Africa’s most promising mobility markets.
I wanted to take a moment to share my personal journey because I know how isolating and overwhelming it can feel to live with a chronic diagnosis like HSV-2. For years, I struggled with the physical and emotional toll this virus took on my life, and honestly, I had almost given up hope after being told by multiple doctors that there was no real cure. It was a dark time, and it deeply affected my confidence and my personal relationships. Everything changed when I stumbled upon a forum where someone shared their own experience with Dr. Kham herbal remedies. I’ll be honest—I was incredibly skeptical at first, having already tried so many things that didn't work. However, the sincerity in their story pushed me to reach out. From the moment I contacted him, he was professional and truly attentive to everything I had been going through. He guided me through the process of using his herbal regimen, and after following his instructions carefully, I was absolutely stunned to see such a positive turn in my health. Getting back to a place where I feel like myself again has been nothing short of a miracle. I am sharing this simply because I know there are others out there searching for answers and feeling like they have nowhere left to turn.
