MasterChef Nigeria: Fads exits competition after judges criticise incomplete dish

In the MasterChef Nigeria kitchen, where precision and execution often outweigh ambition, Fads became the latest contestant to leave the competition following a high-pressure challenge.

After a tense cook-off, the judges called forward Fads and Loye as the weakest performers of the round. Both home cooks faced elimination, but it was Fads whose journey came to an end. Reflecting on her effort, Chef Stone remarked, “I feel you had enough time to create something a bit more than this.”

The episode followed last week’s emotionally charged challenge, where contestants prepared dishes inspired by influential figures in their lives. This time, the focus shifted to the judges, Chef Stone and Chef Eros, who shared personal stories and culinary influences that have shaped their cooking styles before presenting dishes rooted in those experiences.

Contestants were then tasked with reimagining these deeply personal dishes within 90 minutes.

Adding to the pressure, the judges’ dishes were randomly assigned. Some contestants tackled Chef Stone’s Pan African Beef Wellington, while others worked on Chef Eros’ bold combination of ewa hummus, agoyin chutney and Agege flatbread.

Fads approached the challenge with confidence and appeared on course midway through the cook. However, her final presentation — beef and mushroom skewers with pistachio crêpe, failed to meet expectations. The absence of sauces, which were meant to unify the dish, proved critical and left the plates incomplete.

Loye, who worked on Chef Eros’ brief, described his dish as “a flavour bomb in your mouth”. While the judges acknowledged some positive elements, they concluded it did not reach the required standard.

Elsewhere, David and Demilade delivered standout performances. Demilade won the challenge, earning a culinary trip to South Africa. Her dish, inspired by Chef Eros, showcased strong flavours and technique, while her dessert, an apple, cranberry and chinchin crumble, was praised as restaurant-quality by the judges.

David also impressed, building on his previous success with a focused and deliberate approach. “I won last week, but I won’t be happy if I don’t win today,” he said, delivering another strong performance.

With Fads’ departure, seven contestants remain in the competition. They will face a new challenge next week, alongside a surprise twist from the judges that could reshape the contest.
