World Economic Forum says technology convergence is reshaping global competitive advantage

The World Economic Forum (WEF) has said the next era of competitive advantage will be driven not by single breakthrough innovations, but by the ability of organisations and nations to combine and scale multiple technologies across entire operating systems.

In its latest report, Technology Convergence: The New Logic for Competitive Advantage, produced in collaboration with Capgemini, the WEF argues that as artificial intelligence, robotics, advanced materials, spatial computing and next-generation energy systems mature simultaneously, those moving fastest to integrate these technologies into intelligent systems are gaining a decisive edge.

Drawing on cross-industry research and case studies across 12 sectors, the report identifies recurring patterns shaping success, including the blending of mature and emerging technologies and the growing overlap between traditional industry boundaries.

“Breakthrough technologies are advancing rapidly, and value is created when they are applied together,” said Cathy Li, Head of the Centre for AI Excellence and Member of the Executive Committee, World Economic Forum. “The real differentiator is not who owns the most advanced tools, but who can combine them across systems and applications at scale.”

According to the report, the primary challenge for businesses is no longer access to technology or resources alone, but how effectively they integrate digital innovation with physical operations. This transformation is already influencing sectors worldwide, from healthcare and manufacturing to energy and scientific research.

In the United Kingdom, advanced surgical robots are helping expand clinician capacity while maintaining continuity across healthcare teams. In China, automated laboratories are combining robotics, AI and data platforms to speed up scientific discovery and improve coordination across research networks.

“Technology convergence has evolved from a technical discussion into a strategic leadership mandate with direct operational impact,” said Aiman Ezzat, CEO of Capgemini Group. “Competitive advantage increasingly depends on an organization’s ability to integrate technologies, teams, partners and operating processes into coherent systems that deliver value at scale. Leaders who master orchestration, not just adoption, are the ones translating convergence into sustained performance and growth.”

The report also highlights the wider implications for governments, noting that national growth strategies and industrial policy will increasingly depend on how effectively countries align talent, infrastructure, data and regulation.

“This shift has implications not only for companies but also for national growth strategies and industrial policy,” said Jeremy Jurgens, Managing Director, World Economic Forum. “Economies that align talent, infrastructure, data and policy will be better positioned to capture the benefits of converging technologies amid a fast-shifting global landscape.”

The report forms part of the World Economic Forum’s Technology Convergence Initiative, launched in 2024, and builds on its first edition, published in 2025. Based on two years of research, including expert interviews, workshops and case studies spanning healthcare, manufacturing, energy, life sciences and emerging technologies such as brain-computer interfaces, the study explores how eight advanced technology domains interact.

Using the Forum’s 3C framework, combination, convergence and compounding, alongside its Technology Maturity Index, the report tracks how technologies evolve from experimentation into real-world impact, offering a roadmap for organisations and governments seeking to secure long-term advantage in an increasingly interconnected technological landscape.
