LG commissions solar-powered borehole in Imo community to boost clean water access

LG Electronics has commissioned a solar-powered borehole in Omuafor community in Aboh-Mbaise, Owerri, Imo State, expanding access to clean and safe water while marking its first renewable energy-driven water project in south-eastern Nigeria.

The project was unveiled at a ceremony attended by community leaders, residents and the traditional ruler, underlining its social and cultural importance. Designed to operate independently of grid electricity, the borehole uses solar power to ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply.

Speaking at the event, Head of Corporate Marketing, LG Electronics Nigeria, Mr. Paul Mba, said access to clean water remains fundamental to healthy living and inclusive development, adding that integrating solar technology would guarantee an uninterrupted supply while reducing environmental impact.

“At LG, we believe that innovation should create meaningful impact beyond products. This solar-powered borehole project reflects our commitment to sustainability, community well-being, and improving everyday life for Nigerians,” he said.

The initiative is expected to improve living conditions in the community by supporting better hygiene, reducing the risk of waterborne diseases, and easing the burden of sourcing potable water. It is also anticipated to benefit women and children, who are often most affected by limited access to clean water.

The Eze of Omuafor Kingdom, His Royal Highness Dr. Eze Justin Nwaneri, described the project as a milestone for the community.

“This solar-powered borehole is a historic and welcome development for our community. Access to clean water is vital to our people, and we commend LG Electronics for partnering with us to deliver a sustainable solution that will benefit both present and future generations,” he said.

Community leaders also welcomed the initiative, noting that it addresses a critical local need and demonstrates the value of collaboration between corporate organisations and traditional institutions.

The borehole system, powered entirely by renewable energy, is designed to provide a consistent and environmentally responsible water supply, particularly in areas where electricity infrastructure is unreliable.

Public Relations and Sustainability Manager, LG Electronics Nigeria, Mr Moses Osime, said the project forms part of the company’s broader Environmental, Social and Governance strategy, which focuses on delivering shared value through sustainable innovation.

He noted that LG continues to integrate renewable energy, responsible resource use and community development into its global operations, while in Nigeria the company remains committed to using technology to address societal challenges and support inclusive growth.

Also speaking, the Udo Chairman, Mr Collins Uche, said the project would significantly improve quality of life in the community.

“The impact of this project on our daily lives cannot be overstated. Reliable access to clean water will improve health, reduce hardship, and support overall community wellbeing. We are grateful to LG for responding to a real need with a lasting solution in our community,” he said.
