More than 10 major power outages were recorded worldwide in 2025, disrupting electricity supplies for over 1.2 billion people and underscoring the growing pressure on global power systems. For utilities, maintaining grid stability remains a critical priority as demand rises and networks become more complex.
Beyond reliability concerns, the accelerating push towards carbon neutrality is reshaping the power sector. The rapid adoption of renewable energy, electrification, and decentralised generation is placing new demands on grids, which must now integrate large volumes of intermittent energy sources while managing increasingly unpredictable loads. This shift requires power systems to be not only stable, but also highly flexible.
Jason Li, President of the Marketing & Solution Sales Dept of Huawei Electric Power Digitalization BU, explained that "In the past, we relied mostly on automation to address issues in power grids. In the future, however, power grids will transform from mere transmission systems into pivotal players in the energy transition. Digitalization and AI are shifting from optional upgrades to essential elements in core power generation. Together with automation, they form the key drivers for modernizing power grids."
He added, "We believe that deeply integrating digital technologies into power scenarios and reshaping production and operations with telecommunications and AI will enable grids to achieve both ultimate stability and flexibility."
As distributed photovoltaic systems, energy storage, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure are connected to the grid at scale, distribution networks are facing unprecedented challenges. Increased user interaction, along with emerging load-side transactions, is making it harder to maintain balance, stability, and security at the local level.
"The breakthrough for future power systems lies in the distribution network," Jason noted. "And the key to addressing distribution challenges is transparency at the 400 V low-voltage level. To achieve this, Huawei and partners have jointly developed the intelligent distribution solution (IDS) for transparent low-voltage management."
Huawei says its intelligent distribution solution is designed to give utilities deeper visibility into low-voltage networks, helping operators respond more effectively to faults, optimise energy flows, and support the integration of renewables.
At Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, Huawei will showcase its latest AI-driven applications for power digitalisation, including solutions for intelligent power distribution, substations and power plant inspections. The company says these innovations demonstrate how automation, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence can work together to modernise power grids and support a more resilient, low-carbon energy future.
