Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has announced the formation of a new political movement named the America Party, following a high-profile rift with US President Donald Trump. Musk says the party’s core mission is to “give Americans back their freedom” and disrupt what he calls the country’s “one-party system” dominated by Republicans and Democrats.
The billionaire entrepreneur revealed the creation of the party on 5 July 2025, after conducting a poll on his social media platform, X, which received more than 1.2 million responses. According to Musk, around 65% of participants backed the idea of establishing a new party. He added that the America Party would focus on restoring individual freedoms and initially aim to contest 2 or 3 Senate seats and between 8 to 10 House districts.
Musk’s move comes amid a growing feud with Trump, centred around the President’s domestic spending policies. Musk, who was once a vocal supporter of Trump and a major donor to his 2024 campaign, has since criticised Trump’s economic strategy, particularly a bill that raised the debt ceiling by $5 trillion. Musk labelled the legislation as reckless overspending.
With the launch of the America Party, Musk seeks to challenge the traditional two-party structure of US politics, offering a new alternative for voters dissatisfied with the status quo. The announcement has already generated widespread interest and speculation about the future direction of American political dynamics.
