Nigeria Launches Virtual Data Protection Academy to Equip Citizens with Privacy and Cybersecurity Skills

In a major push to boost the country’s digital security and workforce capacity, the Federal Government has officially launched the Data Protection Academy, a virtual learning platform developed by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC). The initiative is designed to train job seekers, private sector employees, and public servants in data protection and cybersecurity fundamentals.

With digital threats on the rise and data breaches becoming more common, the Academy aims to fill a critical skills gap in Nigeria’s digital economy by providing accessible, practical training in one of the fastest-growing sectors in the world.

“It is therefore my honor to formally launch the Data Protection Virtual Academy, a bold and innovative step towards building a digitally secure and globally competitive workforce for Nigeria. The academy that is being launched today offers every Nigerian, from civil servants to private sector employees to young job seekers, access to practical training on data protection principles and basic cyber hygiene,” Tijani stated.

A Strategic Investment in National Security
Beyond its educational function, the Academy is a forward-looking strategy to secure Nigeria’s digital infrastructure. The program seeks to empower citizens with the knowledge to safeguard sensitive data and foster a culture of privacy at every level — from individuals to institutions.

As businesses and government agencies digitize operations, the risk of mishandling data increases. Training workers across sectors in privacy best practices is a proactive move to minimize these vulnerabilities and strengthen the national cybersecurity fabric.

Closing the Digital Skills Gap
Nigeria continues to face a major shortage of professionals in digital privacy, cybersecurity, and data governance. The Academy is designed to bridge this gap, offering certified courses for beginners and professionals alike. Its goal is to match global demand by preparing a new generation of Nigerians for roles in compliance, IT security, and digital risk management.

Flexible, Inclusive, and Aligned with National Strategy
The program is aligned with Nigeria’s National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy. Courses are delivered online, allowing participants from across the country — regardless of employment status or location — to gain essential knowledge and immediately apply their skills in real-world settings. The Academy embodies the principle of digital inclusion, ensuring no one is left behind.

Driving a Nationwide Shift Toward Digital Responsibility
The establishment of the Data Protection Academy marks a key milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation. By scaling data privacy education nationwide, the initiative will enhance national cybersecurity awareness and equip citizens to take control of their digital identities.

Over time, the Academy is expected to drive job creation and build a pipeline of talent for emerging sectors. International partnerships are also in the works to ensure that Nigerian professionals remain competitive in the global digital economy.

In today’s connected world, information is currency — and protecting it is critical. The Data Protection Academy is Nigeria’s bold step toward a future where privacy is protected by design and enforced through education.
