In a move sure to delight longtime fans, Sony has announced a major PlayStation 5 system update that reintroduces a beloved feature from past generations: customisable themes. Beginning April 24, PS5 users worldwide will start receiving the update, which also includes a new audio enhancement tool called “Audio Focus.”
The update is part of Sony’s celebration of PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, and it's clear that community feedback heavily influenced the improvements. For many players, the return of themes recalls the golden days of the PS3 and PS4, when custom visuals and sounds brought a personal touch to the gaming experience.
A Nostalgic Revival: Themes Make a Comeback
The return of themes allows PS5 users to transform their console’s interface with visuals inspired by past PlayStation generations. Players can now customize their home screen with designs modeled after the original PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 eras.
Each theme package features distinct background art, sound effects, and startup audio cues designed to evoke memories for veteran gamers. Users will find these options under the new “Appearance” menu in system settings, making it simple to switch themes and celebrate their PlayStation history.
Sony has confirmed that additional themes—including seasonal and game-specific designs—will roll out over time, further expanding personalization options on the PS5.
Elevating Audio: Introducing “Audio Focus”
Alongside visual customization, the new update introduces “Audio Focus,” a feature designed to upgrade the sound experience for players who use headphones. It offers more nuanced control over in-game audio, ideal for immersive or cinematic titles.
Players can select from four audio enhancement presets:
-
Boost Low Pitch
-
Boost Voices
-
Boost High Pitch
-
Boost Quiet Sounds
Each preset can be fine-tuned with three levels of intensity—Weak, Medium, or Strong. Additionally, players can adjust the left and right audio channels independently for a fully personalized soundscape. Whether sneaking through a horror game or tracking opponents in a competitive shooter, this feature provides a real-time edge.
Global Rollout Details
The system update will roll out globally in stages starting April 24. Sony advises players to keep their consoles connected to the internet and set to auto-update to ensure they receive the features as soon as they become available.
Sony also emphasizes the importance of player feedback in future updates. As the PS5 evolves, the return of fan-favorite features and new innovations like Audio Focus highlight Sony’s commitment to delivering a gaming experience shaped by its community.
With these updates, Sony continues to honor the PlayStation legacy while paving the way for the future of gaming.
