YouTube Deepens Competition with TikTok with the Introduction of Shorts Content

YouTube is set to introduce its users to short-form videos, known as Shorts, as it competes with Chinese social media platform, TikTok. YouTube's extensive collection of official music videos offers it a distinct advantage.

The timing of the rollout is interesting given Universal Music Group's recent decision to remove their music catalogue from TikTok, which includes popular singers such as Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande.

YouTube has introduced four tools for Shorts creators to remix a music video. These include the “Collab” tool which allows users to simultaneously display their video alongside the original music video – perfect for matching choreography. The "Green Screen" option lets you use the music video as a backdrop for reaction Shorts. The "Cut" tool allows you to incorporate a five-second clip from a music video into a Short, whilst the "Sound" tool allows you to use a music video's soundtrack in your own Short.

To use the new function, go to the music video you want to remix, then hit the "Remix" icon and choose one of the four tools. However, not all music videos are remixable, as artists or music labels may choose to opt-out.

“In one spot on YouTube, you can watch the music video on repeat, explore other Shorts created from the same song by fellow fans and relive moments by remixing your favorite artists’ deep catalog cuts,” wrote Sarah Ali, Senior Director of Product Management at YouTube, in a blog post.
