Samsung and Google Cloud have joined forces in a multi-year partnership, unveiling the integration of the latest generative AI (GenAI) capabilities from the hyperscaler into the much-anticipated Galaxy S24 smartphone devices.
The revelation of these AI features and the Galaxy S24 lineup took center stage at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event, affirming the South Korean smartphone giant's commitment to infusing AI across its devices, as teased earlier in the year.
A significant milestone in this collaboration is Samsung's distinction as the inaugural Google Cloud partner to implement Gemini Pro on Vertex AI, a machine learning platform designed for accelerated development of new use cases using custom tools. Google introduced its Gemini AI family of large language models (LLMs) in late 2023, setting the stage for advanced AI functionalities in the Galaxy S24 phones.
Gemini Pro, deployed on Vertex AI, empowers Galaxy S24 users with summarization and classification features within various Samsung apps, including Notes, Voice Recorder, and Keyboard. Notably, Gemini demonstrates the capacity to generalize, comprehend, operate, and synthesize diverse types of information, ranging from text and code to images and video.
Further enhancing the Galaxy S24's capabilities, Google's Imagen 2 GenAI image technology steps in to provide sophisticated photo-editing functions like inpainting, outpainting, and composite editing within the device's Gallery app. Imagen 2, described as Google's most advanced text-to-image diffusion technology, was developed by Google DeepMind. Both Gemini and Imagen 2 are seamlessly delivered to the smartphones through cloud integration.
Samsung's exploration of Google's Gemini Ultra, the largest model tailored for complex tasks, adds another layer of innovation to the Galaxy S24 series. Additionally, the smartphones will incorporate Gemini Nano, an on-device LLM integrated into the Android 14 OS. Gemini Nano powers tasks such as Google's Chat Assist function, allowing users to transform messages into conversational or formal tones.
The collaboration also brings forth Google's Circle to Search function, enabling users to search seamlessly on their Android phones without switching apps. The intuitive feature allows users to circle, scribble, highlight, or tap on items for search, working seamlessly across all three Galaxy S24 devices.
AI capabilities extend further with Live Translate, offering instant language translation during phone calls, and Transcript Assist, which automatically detects and records conversations. The phones also introduce Interpreter, facilitating two-way, real-time voice and text translations within the native app.
Samsung has confirmed plans to extend these AI features to the Galaxy S23 series in the future.
According to Google CEO, Thomas Kurian, the partnership not only enhances the current devices but also enables Samsung's developers to leverage Google's infrastructure for the development and delivery of GenAI-powered applications for its smartphones.
As for the Galaxy S24 devices themselves, the $799 Galaxy S24, $999 Galaxy S24+, and $1,299 Galaxy S24 Ultra are slated for release on January 31. All three models are powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. Taking a cue from Apple, Samsung introduces a titanium frame for the Galaxy S24 Ultra, while the standard and plus models feature aluminum frames. Display sizes vary, with the Galaxy S24 Ultra boasting a 6.8-inch flat display, the Galaxy S24+ a 6.7-inch display, and the standard device a 6.2-inch screen.
