Following its official acquisition of wearable company Fitbit for a whopping $2.1 billion, Google has announced the discontinuation of Fitbit account support and its replacement with its accounts. The first step towards this change is scheduled to begin tomorrow, June 6, 2023.
From tomorrow, users will be able to sign into Fitbit using their Google accounts, according to Droid Life. Fitbit had stated that the move would take place in 2023 without giving a date, but this has now been confirmed. Although it is unclear whether the Fitbit app will require an update, the migration process kick-off.
To delay the inevitable, Google is granting Fitbit users a grace period of two years. However, at some point after early 2025, all Fitbit users will be obliged to transition to a Google account. It is advisable to consider migrating sooner rather than later because, once Google logins are launched on Fitbit, certain functions will necessitate a Google sign-in. For instance, existing accounts will be unable to activate newly released Fitbit devices and features in the future.
Fitbit assures users that their privacy will be safeguarded by Google when switching to a Google login. The company also affirms that health and wellness data will not be utilized for Google Ads and will remain separate from Google Ad data.
