Barcelona Posts Record Turnover of $815m for 2016-17 FY

Spanish LaLiga football club Barcelona has posted record turnover of €708m ($815m) for the 2016-17 financial year.

Total revenue was €13m more than the club's projected figure and up from €679m the previous year. Barcelona generated a profit after tax of €18m to reduce the club’s debt by €24.5m to €247m.

The figures outstrip Barcelona's revenues of $998m for the previous year, with a four-year renewal of the club's sponsorship with Qatar Airways boosting the coffers.

Japanese internet retailer Rakuten began a four-year shirt sponsorship deal with Barca this month that will be worth $A80million per season to the LaLiga giant.

Rivals Real Madrid reported revenues of $912m last October, but those figures did not include money brought in from player sales as Barcelona's do.

The Catalan club has a “strategic plan” in place through 2021 with the central tenant the renovation of its home stadium, Camp Nou. The plan calls for revenue to reach €1 billion by 2021.
