Only a few days after Interpol, the International Criminal Police Organization, ended its relationship with FIFA, the Nobel Peace Center has also withdrawn from its Handshake for Peace initiative with FIFA that has been promoting peace when team captains and officials shook hands before games since 2014.
The Handshake for Peace has been an integral part of all FIFA events since making its debut at the FIFA Club World Cup Morocco 2013, with players and officials alike taking the opportunity to set a good example in front of both the fans inside the stadium and the wider public watching games on television.
While none of the big-money brands have jumped ship yet despite the on-going investigation of several scandal cases in FIFA at the moment, the two organizations have decided to cut ties with FIFA.
FIFA however was not happy with the decision by NPC. "We are disappointed to have learned from the media about the Nobel Peace Center’s intent to terminate the cooperation with FIFA on the Handshake for Peace initiative. FIFA is reluctant to accept this unilateral approach on what is a joint initiative between the football community and the Nobel Peace Center (NPC). This action does not embody the spirit of fair play especially as it obstructs the promotion of the key values of peace-building and anti-discrimination.
"NPC CEO Bente Erichsen stressed in a telephone conversation with FIFA President Blatter this morning that the NPC continued to believe in this initiative and hoped it would live on in football with FIFA", part of FIFA’s press release yesterday reads.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup and FIFA U-20 (Under 20) World Cup in New Zealand have been helping fans and players take their minds off the crisis rocking the body at the moment.
