La Liga seeks new TV rights model

The English Premier League’s lucrative new TV rights deal has inspired Spain’s La Liga to seek a new model to negotiate with broadcasters for more money – and to install a fair balance between the largest and smallest football teams.

Spain's professional league (LFP) has taken legal steps to overturn a decision by the soccer federation (RFEF) to suspend matches from May 16 over a dispute with the government on a new TV rights law.

The Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP) strongly supports the legislation that would end Real Madrid and Barcelona’s hoarding of La Liga’s television revenue by forcing clubs to enter into a collective bargaining agreement similar to that in the Premier League.

The law, signed off by Spain’s cabinet last week, aims to create a more level playing field for clubs in its top two divisions by sharing out cash more equitably.
