The abuse of the children has become a platform for the problem of teenage pregnancy among the female children in Nigeria. It is estimated that about 16 million adolescent girls give birth every year mostly in low and middle income countries which Nigeria belongs.
Research has also shown a clear link between poverty, child abuse and early pregnancy.
Chichi Umeseaka is a teen coach, motivational speaker, TV/radio show host is the founder of 9inteteen; an Non Governmental Organization focused on mentoring teenagers from different backgrounds with focus on domestic violence, child abuse and teenage pregnancy. It was founded in 2013 and has touched the lives of over one million teenagers and youths across the globe.
To celebrate the International Women’s day the founder organized an event tagged ‘Women make it happen for our future tomorrow’. The event involved the tour of the Vanguard Media Limited Apapa, Lagos. According to Chichi, the purpose of the tour was to give the teenagers the opportunity to interact with the staff and learn firsthand the role of the media in the society and the career opportunities available.
Addressing the girls, Pamela Echemunor, Correspondence for Allure magazine said ‘women have a lot to offer the world and we should always be passionate about what we believe in.’ Allure is a style and fashion magazine focused on showing the positive side of fashion.
Chichi explained that 9ineteen is presently partnering with different state governments, youth groups and private companies in Nigeria do address the issue of child abuse and other problems affecting teenagers in Nigeria. She expressed gratitude to brands such as Carmudi Nigeria an online vehicles market place, EasyTaxi Nigeria, a taxi hailing app and Hellofood Nigeria an online tool for food ordering, delivery and catering for supporting the organizers of the event.
