Odegaard completes move to Real Madrid

Martin Odegaard, 16, was presented as a Real Madrid player Thursday. He signed a three-and-a-half year contract with Real, after being courted by several top European clubs.

"The reason I have chosen to join Real is because they are the club that offer me the best possibilities to grow and develop as a player, and the best conditions both on and off the pitch," he said. "My aim is to become as good a player as possible. Whether I play in the first or second team to begin with is not important at the moment."

Odegaard - the youngest ever player for the Norwegian national side - will start out by playing for Real's third-division reserve side Castilla, the coach of which is former World Cup winner Zinedine Zidane. "I will begin playing for Castilla but I will be delighted if (first team coach) Ancelotti calls me up. It is an advantage that Real have a second team coached by one of the world's best players (Zidane)."

Sports daily Marca reported that Real would pay Odegaard's Norwegian club Stromsgodset 2.8 million euros (3.2 million dollars) now and a maximum of 2.8 million more in add-ons later, depending on the youngster's achievements. Marca also reported that Real's rivals Barcelona tried Wednesday to sabotage the deal by offering Stromsgodset a higher transfer fee for the teenager.
