How Celebrities, Sportspersons Are Making 'Selfies' More Trendy

The term Technological Determinism is believed to have been coined by Thorstein Veblen (1857–1929), an American sociologist and economist. Technological Determinism state that media technology shapes how we as individuals in a society think, feel, act, and how are society operates as we move from one technological age to another.

While there have been several argument by some scholars as to what extent the technology shape us as a society it is a fact that it has become a part of us that will keep unfolding till the end of time.
First, the emergence of the internet, then sophisticated multimedia mobile phone - followed by camera innovations on handsets, technology has continued to make its mark on virtually everything human engage in.

The trend of selfie photograph has become the in-thing. Love it or hate it, selfies have become a social media mainstay. The way celebrities, athletes and sportspersons have embraced the trend is quite intriguing.

With the phenomenal rise in use of the word ‘Selfie’ in the year 2013, social media sites helped to turn this narcissistic approach to something more popular appealing.

In September last year, there were plenty of great celebrity selfie moments on Instagram. Nicki Minaj took a selfie with Beyonce after their performance in Paris, while Amber Rose, Rita Ora, Toya Wright and Zena Foster kept selfies sexy in bed. Keyshia Cole, Adrienne Bailon and Gloria Govan got glam for the cam while Michelle Williams took selfies while promoting her album Journey To Freedom. Elle Varner and Estelle shared their selfies with friends.

During UNICEF – #WAKEUPCALL campaign to raise money for outreach to Syria, with the aim to help refugee children, celebrities such as Tom Hiddleston, Stephen Fry and Naomi Campbell posted pictures to Instagram immediately after waking up.

In Sport, 2014 - a world cup year recorded an intriguing experience of selfie by many footballer and the sport enthusiasts. Christoph Kramer of Germany takes a selfie with team-mates Kevin Grosskreutz, Manuel Neuer and Lukas Podolski after winning the World Cup in July.

Other sporting events also sees the trend further made the trendy a memorable fad for many.

In the U.S., Dom Dwyer of MLS side Sporting Kansas City, celebrated a goal against Chicago Fire in July by taking a selfie - and getting booked by the referee for the action.
