Italian Radical Party Calls for Rome 2024 Olympic Bid Referendum

Italian Radicals Political Party through a website launched Tuesday is calling for a referendum to be held on whether or not Rome should continue its bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

The website, referendumroma2024.it, accompanied by a 28-page dossier entitled "Roma 2024: A very risky bet", describes a recent history of Olympic cost over-runs, unsustainable legacies and financial failures.

Referencing the long legacy of tax burden on citizens in Quebec, Canada (from the Montreal 1976 Games), Grenoble, France and Barcelona, Spain – Referendum Roma 2024 urges that the citizens should have the right to decide in Rome.  The petition letter also points to referendums that were held in Davos, Krakow, Oslo and Hamburg – the latter German city a former bid rival of Rome that was forced to remove itself from the 2024 race.

Rome city hosted the 1960 Games but is in a tough race to host the 2024 edition, going up against Budapest, Los Angeles and Paris.

The International Olympic Committee will vote on the host city at their session in Lima, Peru in September 2017.
