The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has reiterated its commitment to staff welfare, regular promotions and professional development, describing its workforce as central to the agency’s growth and operational performance.
The agency said it would continue to invest in staff training, capacity building and career progression, while ensuring that promotion decisions are guided by merit, competence and individual performance.
Head of Corporate Communications, Monsurat Amasa-Oyelude, said LIRS’s achievements in revenue generation and operational efficiency were largely driven by the collective contributions and dedication of its employees.
She made this clarification in response to a recent media report alleging strained relations between LIRS management and its workforce over a promotion exercise and the involvement of the Department of State Services (DSS).
LIRS dismissed the report as inaccurate, clarifying that no member of staff, including the chairman of the staff union, was detained by the DSS.
According to the agency, the DSS invited representatives of both management and the staff union to a meeting to discuss the matter. Following the engagement, both parties were asked to return to status quo. LIRS maintained that no employee was detained or intimidated during the process.
Amasa-Oyelude said, “It is unfortunate that a section of the media has chosen sensationalism over responsible journalism by publishing a concocted account of events surrounding the DSS engagement. Nobody was detained. As stated earlier, both parties were invited, the matter was discussed, and everyone was asked to return to status quo. To turn this into a story of detention and intimidation is a misrepresentation of the facts.
“LIRS is a family of approximately 2,800 professionals whose collective dedication has driven the agency’s extraordinary growth. Management has consistently prioritised their welfare, training, professional development and career progression. The relationship between management and the overwhelming majority of our workforce remains anchored on mutual respect and a shared commitment to institutional success.”
The agency reiterated its willingness to engage constructively with recognised staff representatives, adding that it would sustain policies aimed at promoting employee development, workplace harmony, meritocracy and efficient service delivery.
