Sony has reportedly secured exclusive access to AMD’s RDNA 5 graphics technology for its rumoured next-generation PlayStation handheld, believed to be codenamed Project Canis, according to gaming industry reports.
The reported deal could give Sony a competitive advantage in the handheld gaming market by preventing rival handheld console and gaming PC manufacturers from using the same technology, although Sony Interactive Entertainment has yet to confirm the claims.
Richard Leadbetter, founder of Digital Foundry and a veteran gaming technology analyst, discussed the reported arrangement in the latest episode of Digital Foundry Direct on Patreon.
He said: "There have been some behind-the-scene discussions that Sony has an exclusive of sorts on RDNA5 for handheld with its mobile device that's coming."
If confirmed, the reported exclusivity arrangement could distinguish Sony’s upcoming handheld from competing gaming devices, potentially giving the company access to customised AMD graphics technology not available to other manufacturers.
However, details surrounding Project Canis, including its hardware specifications, performance capabilities and commercial availability, remain unconfirmed by Sony.
Sony has also yet to announce an official release date or price for its anticipated next-generation PlayStation console, despite growing speculation about its launch plans.
Sony chief executive Hiroki Totoki addressed the company’s position in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, as reported by Digital Foundry.
Totoki said: "We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console or at what prices. So we would like to really observe and follow the situation."
His comments indicate that Sony is continuing to assess market conditions before deciding when to launch its next-generation console and how much it will cost.
The statement comes amid reports that the rumoured PS6 handheld could cost more than $600, based on claims from a hardware industry insider. Other reports have suggested that the next-generation PlayStation console could launch as early as 2027.
Neither the reported handheld price nor the proposed 2027 release window has been officially confirmed by Sony.
With details about the PS6 and Project Canis still emerging, gamers will have to wait for official announcements to establish the consoles’ specifications, pricing and release dates.
