2027 Volkswagen Atlas Debuts with New Look, Redesigned Interior and More Power

Ten years after its introduction, Volkswagen has unveiled the 2027 Atlas with a redesigned exterior, an all-new interior and a more powerful engine, describing the latest three-row crossover as “all new”.

The Volkswagen Atlas was introduced in 2017 as the German automaker’s answer to growing demand for mid-to-large crossover SUVs in the US market. The model marked a significant expansion of Volkswagen’s American offering beyond its traditional range of smaller cars and SUVs and is built at the company’s plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Volkswagen has progressively updated the Atlas since its debut, with major refreshes in 2021 and 2024. For 2027, however, the company is positioning the latest model as a more comprehensive transformation, bringing improvements to its powertrain, exterior styling and cabin.

The biggest mechanical change comes under the bonnet, where the Atlas gets an updated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with direct injection and variable turbocharging.

The revised engine produces 282 horsepower between 6,000 and 6,500 rpm, representing a 13 per cent increase over the previous model. Torque remains unchanged at 258 lb-ft between 1,900 and 5,750 rpm.

“The turbocharged and direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI EA888 evo5 engine gets new charge cooling, variable-geometry turbocharger, injection system, and camshaft design among the revisions,” VW says.

Volkswagen has also made changes to the engine’s internal components. The crankpin diameter has increased from 1.88 inches to 1.97 inches, while the connecting rods have been shortened from 5.67 inches to 5.51 inches to accommodate a new, thicker piston crown.

The previous EA888 engine family has been used across several Volkswagen Group models, including vehicles from Audi, Skoda, Seat, Cupra and Porsche. For the new evo5 version, however, Volkswagen lists the Atlas and Tiguan. The Tiguan receives a detuned version producing 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, available exclusively on the SEL R-Line Turbo trim.

The 2027 Atlas also receives extensive exterior styling changes. The redesigned body features a new bonnet, front end and grille, along with an illuminated Volkswagen logo. New character lines run along the sides, while a redesigned rear spoiler and new taillights complete the updated look.

The Atlas retains its large, boxy proportions, reinforcing the impression of strength and stability that has become a defining feature of the three-row SUV.

Inside, Volkswagen has given the Atlas a completely redesigned cabin with a stronger focus on materials, technology and visual cohesion.

One of the standout features is the raised wood trim available on the SEL R-Line, while Volkswagen describes the broader interior design as “a bold loop (that) unifies the cockpit with one strong, architectural statement.”

“Everything flows with purpose, from displays to vents and lighting,” VW says.

Depending on the trim level, buyers can choose from leatherette, Varenna leather or Nappa leather seating surfaces, giving the 2027 Atlas a more premium cabin feel.

The redesigned Atlas continues to use an eight-speed automatic transmission. However, the new twist-style gear selector mounted on the steering column may take some getting used to for drivers accustomed to a conventional centre-console shifter.

Overall, the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas represents the most extensive update yet to the model, combining increased engine output with a substantially redesigned exterior and cabin as Volkswagen seeks to keep its three-row SUV competitive in the increasingly crowded American crossover market.
