Dangote’s ₦2.15tn IPO Boosts Nigerian Fintech Customer Acquisition

Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s ₦2.15 trillion public share offering is creating a major customer-acquisition opportunity for Nigerian fintech and digital investment platforms.

The refinery is offering 4.1 billion new shares at ₦525 each, with a minimum subscription of 10 shares costing ₦5,250. The offer opened on September 14 and closes on October 13, with trading expected to begin in November.

Platforms including Bamboo, Cowrywise, PiggyVest, Flutterwave, Moniepoint and Paga are among more than 55 approved channels distributing the offer, with several allowing customers to purchase shares without direct transaction fees.

The strategy appears to be less about immediate transaction revenue and more about acquiring customers who could continue using their investment, savings and financial services after the IPO.

Bamboo provides an indication of the scale of the opportunity. The investment platform told TechCabal it added more than 236,000 new accounts in the week before the offer, with about 152,000, or 64 per cent, funded and trading within the same week.

The surge in demand also caused heavy traffic on some platforms. Reuters reported that Bamboo’s traffic increased tenfold within 30 minutes of the IPO launch.

Nigeria experienced a similar digital investment surge during MTN Nigeria’s 2021 public offer, when more than 89 per cent of retail subscribers applied through the PrimaryOffer platform and 114,938 new Central Securities Clearing System accounts were opened by first-time investors.

The Dangote offer, however, is being distributed through a broader network of digital and traditional channels, potentially giving fintechs access to a much larger pool of new customers.

For the platforms, the key question will be whether investors acquired through the IPO remain active after the offer closes.

The number of customers who make subsequent investments, use other financial products and generate recurring revenue will ultimately determine the longer-term commercial value of the Dangote IPO for Nigeria’s fintech sector.
