FG Pledges Reliable Power Supply with Fresh Investment to Stabilise National Grid

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to providing Nigerians with a more reliable electricity supply, announcing plans to invest in stabilising the national grid to reduce recurring system collapses and voltage fluctuations.

The Honourable Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the Ministry was shifting from short-term interventions to a long-term transformation of the country's transmission infrastructure, stressing that grid stability remains the cornerstone of sustainable power sector reforms.

“We cannot talk about generation gains or distribution reforms if the grid itself is fragile. This administration is committed to a stable, resilient national grid, not as a slogan, but as a measurable, time-bound programme of work,” the Minister said.

As part of the initiative, the Ministry has established a Technical Working Committee on Grid Stabilisation to spearhead efforts to strengthen the transmission network. The committee will bring together engineering and regulatory experts to tackle transmission bottlenecks, ageing infrastructure and the persistent system failures that have disrupted electricity supply across the country.

The committee is expected to collaborate closely with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) to identify priority areas requiring intervention. Planned investments will focus on reinforcing critical transmission corridors, improving grid redundancy, and modernising control and monitoring systems to minimise the frequency and impact of power outages.

The announcement forms part of the Federal Government's broader efforts to rebuild public confidence in Nigeria's electricity sector after years of unreliable supply and unmet expectations.

Acknowledging public scepticism, Tegbe said the administration recognised that Nigerians wanted tangible results rather than assurances.

“We are not asking for blind faith. We are asking to be held to account against clear milestones, and that is exactly what we intend to do,” he said.

The Ministry added that progress updates on the grid stabilisation programme would be communicated regularly through a coordinated engagement strategy involving key institutions in the power sector. The approach is intended to keep citizens, investors and other stakeholders informed as implementation advances.
