X has launched a fully rebuilt version of its Android app following nearly a year of development, introducing faster performance, smoother navigation, improved notifications, and a more reliable experience for users.
The company said the new Android application was rebuilt from the ground up rather than being delivered through a series of incremental updates, making it one of the platform’s biggest engineering projects since Elon Musk acquired the company.
The redesigned app is now available to Android users and focuses on improving key areas of the experience, including loading times, scrolling performance, stability, and overall responsiveness.
The decision to rebuild the Android app came after X recognised that its Android experience had fallen behind its iOS version. In August 2025, X Head of Product Nikita Bier announced that the company was creating a dedicated Android engineering team to redesign the app and improve performance.
The move reflected the importance of Android to X’s global user base, particularly in markets where Google’s mobile operating system dominates smartphone usage.
Later in 2025, Bier pointed to strong growth in Android downloads, highlighting the need to deliver a better experience for millions of users who access the platform through Android devices.
According to Bier, the update represents a complete technical rebuild rather than a simple visual refresh.
“It’s faster, smoother and more reliable. But most of all: it will enable us to build new features at lightning speed,” he said.
Beyond improving speed and reliability, X said the rebuilt Android app provides a stronger technical foundation that will allow developers to introduce new features more efficiently.
The platform has recently expanded beyond traditional social networking with new products and features, including X Money and X Chat, as part of Elon Musk’s ambition to transform X into a broader digital ecosystem.
A more flexible Android architecture could help X deliver these experiences to a wider global audience, particularly in emerging markets where Android devices account for a significant share of smartphone usage.
For years, Android users have reported issues with the X app, including slow loading speeds, inconsistent performance and technical problems affecting everyday features.
Some users previously experienced issues with links from X failing to load posts correctly, highlighting differences between the Android and iOS versions of the platform.
The company hopes the rebuilt app will resolve many of these concerns by improving stability and delivering a smoother overall user experience.
However, Bier said development work is continuing, with further improvements planned, including better optimisation for older Android devices and support for Spaces, X’s live audio feature.
X confirmed that additional features will be introduced to Android users in the future, including its new video editor, react-with-video functionality, cashtags, and custom timelines.
The updates form part of the company’s wider strategy to ensure Android users have access to the full range of features available across the platform.
Existing Android users can access the updated experience by updating the X app through the Google Play Store.
With the rebuilt Android application, X is aiming to improve user satisfaction while creating a stronger foundation for faster product development as it continues its transformation from a social media platform into a broader digital ecosystem.
