Airtel Nigeria has secured a significant regulatory approval after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) renewed its 900MHz spectrum licence for another 10 years, reinforcing the telecommunications operator’s long-term network expansion strategy and investment plans in Nigeria.
The renewal was disclosed by parent company Airtel Africa in its second-quarter 2026 financial results. According to the company, the NCC confirmed the renewal terms on April 15, 2026, allowing Airtel Nigeria to retain one of its most valuable spectrum assets for an additional decade.
Under the agreement, Airtel Nigeria will pay $37 million, equivalent to approximately ₦50.5 billion based on the agreed exchange rate, to renew the licence. Although the payment terms have been finalised, the renewed licence will only take effect after the expiration of the current licence.
Airtel Nigeria’s existing 900MHz spectrum licence remains valid until November 30, 2031. The renewed licence will commence on December 1, 2031, and run until November 30, 2041, ensuring uninterrupted access to the spectrum for another decade.
The 900MHz frequency band is widely regarded as one of the most valuable assets for mobile network operators because of its ability to deliver wider geographic coverage and stronger indoor signal penetration. Its characteristics make it particularly suitable for extending connectivity to rural and underserved communities, where deploying additional telecommunications infrastructure is often more complex and costly.
The licence renewal also supports Nigeria’s digital inclusion agenda. The Federal Government and the NCC have continued to promote investments that expand broadband access, strengthen mobile connectivity and bridge the digital divide across the country.
For Airtel Nigeria, the extension provides long-term certainty for network planning and infrastructure investment. It enables the operator to continue enhancing its voice and data services while maintaining dependable coverage for millions of subscribers in both urban and rural areas.
The agreement also delivers financial benefits. By paying the renewal fee in naira instead of foreign currency, Airtel Nigeria reduces its short-term exposure to exchange rate volatility, a key consideration for businesses operating in Nigeria’s fluctuating foreign exchange market.
The licence renewal coincides with strong financial results from Airtel Nigeria. During the second quarter of 2026, the company generated ₦689.87 billion in revenue, representing a 50.4 per cent year-on-year increase in reported currency. Airtel attributed the growth largely to rising demand for mobile data services, driven by increasing smartphone adoption and internet usage.
Nigeria remains Airtel Africa’s largest market, accounting for just over 27 per cent of the group’s total revenue across its operations in 14 African countries. The company also reported continued growth in smartphone adoption, with smartphone penetration reaching 56.1 per cent during the quarter.
Demand for mobile data continued to rise, with average monthly data usage per smartphone customer increasing to 14.9GB from 11.8GB in the corresponding period last year. The increase reflects growing consumer demand for streaming platforms, social media, online gaming, digital payments and other internet-based services.
Beyond telecommunications, Airtel Africa is advancing plans to expand its financial services business through the proposed initial public offering of Airtel Money later this year, with London identified as its preferred listing venue. During the quarter, Airtel Money processed transactions worth $61.4 billion, while revenue from the mobile money business recorded significant year-on-year growth.
By securing another decade of access to the 900MHz spectrum, Airtel Nigeria has strengthened the foundation for future network investments. As demand for faster mobile internet services and broader broadband coverage continues to rise, the renewed licence positions the operator to enhance service quality while supporting Nigeria’s ongoing digital transformation.
