The Federal Government has appointed Dr Donald Ofili as the substantive Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).
The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, officially presented the appointment letter to Ofili on Tuesday at the ministry's headquarters in Abuja.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the ministry’s Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr Ado Bako.
Salako said the appointment followed a competitive and transparent selection process conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria Act and other relevant regulations.
He explained that the position was publicly advertised before applications were screened and candidates assessed against established criteria. Ofili eventually emerged as the highest-ranked candidate among five shortlisted applicants.
The minister stressed the critical role of medical laboratory science in strengthening healthcare delivery across Nigeria, noting that accurate diagnosis remains the foundation of effective patient care.
“Without correct diagnosis, healthcare practitioners would be operating in uncertainty. Medical laboratory science provides the evidence needed for quality healthcare and remains indispensable to our health system,” he said.
In his response, Ofili expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for the appointment and pledged to strengthen the council's operations and uphold professional excellence within the sector.
He also committed to collaborating with professional associations, government institutions and other stakeholders to improve regulatory compliance, enhance staff welfare and support the government's health sector renewal agenda.
Mrs Fidelia Ginikanwa, Head of Corporate Affairs and Public Relations at the council, said Ofili would lead the organisation’s regulatory and professional responsibilities nationwide.
She added that the new registrar would prioritise stronger regulatory oversight, quality assurance, laboratory accreditation and other initiatives designed to improve diagnostic services across the country.
Ginikanwa described Ofili as a seasoned medical laboratory scientist and international biosafety expert whose wealth of experience would help advance healthcare standards and service delivery in Nigeria.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ofili’s appointment takes immediate effect and will run for an initial four-year term, in line with the provisions of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria Act.
