Canon Launches EOS C50: Compact Full-Frame Cinema Camera with 7K Open Gate Recording for Creative Professionals

Canon Europe has introduced the EOS C50, a versatile, full-frame, RF-mount hybrid Cinema EOS camera designed for professional videographers and agile production teams.

As the most compact camera in Canon’s Cinema EOS range, the EOS C50 seamlessly adapts to a variety of filming scenarios, from high-paced shoots to large-scale productions, while concealing a suite of professional-grade features.

At its core, the EOS C50 features a new 7K full-frame CMOS sensor paired with Canon’s advanced DIGIC DV 7 processor, delivering exceptional image quality for both video and stills. The camera supports internal RAW video recording at up to 7K 60P, high frame rate capture at 4K 120P / 2K 180P, and 32MP high-resolution stills.

The EOS C50 is the first Cinema EOS model to offer open gate recording, using the full sensor area for maximum resolution and creative flexibility. In Full Frame 3:2 sensor mode, filmmakers can capture the entire image circle of full-frame lenses. Open gate recording enables horizontal and vertical movie formats to be edited from the same footage, providing ample room for reframing shots. When paired with anamorphic lenses, it produces a taller, immersive cinematic look.

For projects requiring fast turnaround, the EOS C50 supports Simultaneous Crop Recording, capturing a full-frame image alongside a cropped vertical or square version optimised for social media or advertising. The cropped area can be shifted horizontally for precise framing and recorded in a separate format to suit delivery requirements.

Hybrid Video and Stills Performance

The EOS C50’s hybrid design allows seamless switching between high-resolution 7K video and 32MP still photography. The camera interface adapts automatically, offering the Cinema EOS interface for video and the classic Canon EOS R menu for stills.

Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II delivers rapid, precise subject detection and tracking, with the ability to prioritise the eyes of people, dogs, cats and birds. Autofocus speed and tracking responsiveness can be finely adjusted to match the subject’s movement.

Lightweight, Modular Design for Dynamic Shoots

The EOS C50’s lightweight, modular body is optimised for handheld use or gimbals, with multiple accessory mounting points and automatic adjustment for vertical or horizontal shooting.

The detachable handle unit enhances control and comfort, offering two full-size 3-pin XLR audio terminals, control dials, a REC button, and a zoom rocker for camcorder-style operation during fast-paced shoots.

Native RF lens support is complemented by optional Canon PL-RF and EF-EOS R mount adapters, enabling use of EF and PL lenses securely.

Professional Connectivity and Workflow Integration

Connectivity options include MIC, XLR, Timecode, HDMI OUT (Type-A), USB (Type-C), and dual CFexpress and SD card slots for simultaneous recording of multiple formats and resolutions. The EOS C50 supports UVC/UAC for livestreaming up to 60P/50P via USB, XC Protocol remote operation, and real-time content transfer over Wi-Fi or USB using Canon’s Content Transfer Professional (CTP) app.

In addition, the EOS C50 integrates with Adobe’s Frame.io Camera to Cloud, enabling direct transfer of proxy files from the camera to the platform for streamlined production-to-post workflows alongside the EOS C400 and EOS C80.

With its compact, adaptable design, powerful full-frame sensor, and extensive connectivity, the EOS C50 raises the standard for professional compact cinema cameras. Building on the EOS R5 C, it delivers uncompromising image quality for both video and stills.

Canon also confirmed upcoming free-of-charge firmware updates for existing Cinema EOS cameras later this year, including 3:2 Open Gate RAW Recording at 6000x4000 for the EOS C400, View Assist during playback for the EOS C80, and improvements to focus peaking across the EOS C70, EOS R5 C, and EOS C80.
