Samsung Electronics Appoints New Mobile Chief

Samsung Electronics has appointed Roh Tae-moon as the new head of its smartphone unit. He will take over from co-ceo Dj Koh who will continue to coordinate the chaebol’s IT and mobile communications division.

Roh is highly rated especially for his meticulousness when it comes to phone features. In some quarters he is said to be “an engineering maven.”

Roh became a Samsung staff in 1997 and has played critical roles in the research development of the Galaxy device series. He’s also been instrumental in cutting costs through the outsourcing of handset production to better compete with Chinese handset makers like Huawei.

Samsung continues to be a force to reckon with in the global handset market,  however, it has seen an increase in competition at the low- and mid-tier levels from Chinese competitors like Huawei, Vivo, and Oppo.

One of Roh’s tasks will be to grow Samsung in important markets like China and India as well as making foldables successful after Samsung stumbled with the Galaxy Fold.

The company will unveil its second-generation foldable alongside its new Galaxy S20 flagship series of phones at an event on February 11th in San Francisco.
