Bayern Munich rides with Audi after BMW pulled out

German automobile manufacturer, Audi has extended its partnership with Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich after a stiff contest with BMW in the last six month.

The new German football champions signed the deal with Audi after BMW confirmed to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (FAS) that it had pulled out of a deal to become the club’s new automotive partner.

Bayern president Uli Hoeness revealed in March that the top-flight German football side had signed a memorandum of understanding with BMW to enter into a ten-year, €800 million (US$893 million) strategic partnership by 2025, when Audi’s current contract was due to expire.

BMW faced a bill of as much as a billion euros over 12 years to wrest the trophy sponsorship from Audi’s grasp, a bill which ultimately it could not justify amid sliding profits.

“We have ended the talks and will not become sponsors of FC Bayern,” the spokesperson confirmed.

News of Audi’s mega-offer emerged shortly before Bayern’s 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, which saw the club hold off Borussia Dortmund’s latest challenge to win their seventh consecutive Bundesliga title.
