Florentino Perez to Continue as Real Madrid President Until 2021, Emeges Unopposed

Florentino Pérez will remain the president of Spanish LaLiga football club Real Madrid until 2021 having emerged unopposed in presidential election which ended on Monday.

The 70-year-old returned as Real president in 2009 and has since been through three elections, each without a rival coming forward.

Ahead of 2013’s election, Real introduced changes to its statues that make it difficult for outside parties to seize control of the club. The changes mean presidential candidates have to have been club members for at least 20 years, double the previous requirement.

Aspiring investors must also personally provide a financial guarantee of 15 per cent of the club’s budget rather than relying on any third party. Pérez’s tenure has witnessed a period of great success on-the-pitch for Real.

The 2016-17 season saw Real claim its third Uefa Champions League trophy in four seasons, while the club won LaLiga for the first time since 2011-12. Real’s trophy-laden campaign was added to by victories in the Fifa Club World Cup and the Uefa Super Cup.
