FIFA World Cup: China Nurtures Ambition To Host The World

In a recent meeting with FIFA President in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed the country's interest to host the World Cup “in the future”.

In the last few years, there have been speculation that China will bid to host the 2030 or 2034 World Cup.

Albeit it is believed that the meeting focused on the development of the sport in China.

According to FIFA: “the Chinese President expressed his hope, and the dream of many Chinese people, that the country would have the opportunity to host a Fifa men’s World Cup at some stage in the future.”

Chinese state-owned broadcaster CCTV quoted Xi as saying: “There is still a very large disparity in the general standard of China's football today compared to major footballing nations. The true meaning of football is not just about competition, it is more about cultivating people's patriotism and collective fighting spirit.”

China has only qualified for the World Cup on one occasion – for the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea – and the national team is almost certain to miss out on the 2018 edition following a 2-2 draw with Syria on Tuesday.
