ARS 5: Lagos boys, girls dominate South-west Regional championships

…qualify for National Finals holding on September 5

Lagos, Nigeria; August 17, 2015: The male and female teams from Lagos State have qualified to represent the South West region at the National Finals of the Airtel Rising Stars (ARS) 5 U-17 tournament holding on September 5, 2015 at the Yaba College of Technology, Sports Complex, Lagos.

In the two captivating final matches played on Sunday 16th August at the Legacy Pitch, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, the Lagos State boys clinched the ticket after defeating their Osun State counterpart via penalties which ended 5-3. The match had ended 1-1 draw. In the female category, the girls from Lagos State won the Oyo State girls by 2 goals to nil. The goals were scored by Angela Mosindi and Innocent Ayomide.

Meanwhile, boys from Oyo State defeated their Ekiti State counterparts in third place encounter by 6 goals to nil. Four of the goals were scored by the fleet-footed striker, Oyebode Hassan. The third place match in the female category between Team Ondo and Team Osun ended 2-2 regulation time but Osun girls eventually won through penalties by 7 goals to 6.

Ex-Super Eagles International and ARS 5 Technical Adviser, Mutiu Adepoju alongside top executives from leading telecoms operator, Airtel Nigeria, including the Regional Operations Director, Lagos, Oladokun Oye and Zonal Business Manager, Akinloye Adebisi,  were present at the finals of the Championship to present the medals and trophies to the winners.

While presenting the trophies to captains of the winning teams, Mr. Oye acknowledged all the participants and commended the Lagos teams for emerging victorious in the tournament. He reiterated the company’s commitment to youth empowerment and development of grassroots sports in Nigeria through its various initiatives including the Airtel Rising Star U-17 football tournament.

 Also speaking at the Lagos Regional Finals, Adepoju who acted as mentor to the teams under the Lagos Regional Championship said, “We will try our best to ensure that we mentor that players who are to represent region and we will try to encourage them to form a very strong team that would play fantastic football in the national finals.”

Sebastian Timothy, captain of the Lagos boys and Mosindi Angela, captain of the female team Lagos, said they were delighted to have won the regional championship and their teams are set to the National Finals. While commending Airtel Nigeria, Sebastian said: “We are grateful to the company for giving us this platform to display our talents. We pray that God continues to lift up Airtel.”

Four outstanding players were also honoured during the Championship. 16 year-old Oyebola Oyelade won the female Highest Goal Scorer with 2 goals, while Issa Saheed of team Lagos won the male category with 5 goals and also won the Most Valuable Player award. Aliu Abiola won the Most Valuable Player in the female category.
The tournament, a unique initiative of leading telecommunications service provider, Airtel Nigeria, has been providing support for the development of football talents across Nigeria since 2011. It is aimed at discovering talented youths (male and female) of secondary school age and providing them with the opportunity to gain football skills and develop into renowned stars.
