Lewis Hamilton Slammed on Social Media for Spraying Champagne on Race Hostess

Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton has come under fire and been accused of sexism after he sprayed a race hostess in the face with champagne following his race victory at the Chinese Grand Prix.

According to an article in Sydney Morning Herald, as Hamilton stood on the top tier of the Shanghai podium, he released a torrent of champagne into the face of the hostess to celebrate his victory. This was the second time he has such a thing in the same season.

The move has since been generating mix reactions from fans and atheletes on social media especially on Twitter. Here are some of the tweets:

Versace Lettuce via Twitter handle @RyanLewisRacing said: "In reality, Lewis Hamilton would not spray champagne in some random dudes face on the podium."

Ramon Orsine via @ramonorsine tweeted "@BBCSport - When Vettel plays champagne on grid girl, hero. When @LewisHamilton does, criminal."

Enisa Salerno via @enisasalerno tweeted: "@LewisHamilton you stupid punk u should apologize to the hostess that you squirted champagne on spoiled brat u dont deserve anything"

Stephen Saldanha through @stephensaldanha said: "Man shut up. @LewisHamilton was just being considerate sharing his champagne."

It appears the act is a signature move for Hamilton. It's not the first time a grand prix hostess has been drenched by Hamilton. Last year, he sprayed champagne at grid girls after winning a race at Montmelo at the Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Catalunya.

Object, an organization that campaigns against media sexism and “sex object culture,” issued a statement demanding Hamilton apologize for his actions.

"It is surely a very difficult position to be a grid girl and she would have had little option but to stand there and take it," Roz Hardie, the chief executive of anti-sexism group, Object said in the statement.

"That is something of which he should be aware. But instead, he appears to have abused her position," Roz added.
