Platini to be re-elected unopposed for third Uefa term

Michel Platini is set to serve as Uefa president for a third consecutive term after no rival candidates emerged to contest the top job at European football’s governing body.

Platini’s continuation in the role until 2019 is set to be confirmed in March at the Uefa Congress in Vienna after the December 24 deadline for candidacy submissions passed without any challengers coming forward.

Platini was first elected for the post of UEFA President in January of 2007 and was re-elected for a second term in March of 2011.

The Frenchman, who made 72 international appearances and led his country to victory at the 1984 European Championships, and considered to be one of the greatest footballers following a career at Saint-Étienne and Juventus.
