Sony has used its Mobile World Congress press conference to officially launched the Xperia Z2 smartphone, a new flagship handset which aims to improve on the outgoing Xperia Z1 with a 5.2in, Full HD display which uses technology borrowed from the company's TV division and improved camera credentials including 4K video capture.

For the first time ever in a smartphone, the Xperia Z2 also includes digital noise cancelling headphones in the box.

As predicted by a series of leaks ahead of the official announcement, the Xperia Z2 is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset running at 2.3Ghz, paired with 3GB of RAM, an Adreno 330 GPU and 16GB of internal storage, along with a microSD card for adding extra capacity later. A huge 3,200mAh battery should provide all-day battery life.

“With Xperia Z2 we have taken our premium Z series to the next level, delivering unique experiences that only Sony can offer,” said Kunimasa Suzuki, President and CEO, Sony Mobile Communications. “We have redefined the smartphone once again through our camera. Xperia Z2 offers an innovative experience that captures memories in stunning detail through 4K video shooting, or offers new ways to use the camera with our unique Xperia camera apps. Furthermore, the Best of Sony has been delivered in the sound quality and customers are now able to listen to their music even in noisy environments without interruptions thanks to our acclaimed digital noise cancelling technology.”

The Xperia Z2 will launch globally from March 2014.
