Umbro begins search for Golaços

Roberto Carlos
Umbro has kicked off a global search for ‘golaços’, meaning great goals, with the launch of a new app, teaming up with Brazilian great Roberto Carlos - a player who became more famous for his swerving free-kick against France in 1997.

Inspired by this iconic goal, Umbro has teamed up with the Brazilian World Cup winner to find a new generation of golaços. The competition calls on football players across the world to capture and share their own goals via Umbro’s special Golaço app.

Roberto Carlos will select five winners who’ll get to enjoy the ultimate Brazilian football experience, including return flights to Brazil, exclusive football skills session with Roberto Carlos, a training session at Clube Atlético Paranaense and full professional training kit and boots from Umbro.

Roberto Carlos said: “I still get asked about that goal and how I scored it. People have tried to analyse it but there is no explanation. It shouldn’t have had that much swerve but I knew it was going in.

“That goal made history. It’s something I’ve spoken to Zidane and Beckham about many times… ‘How can we make history with a ball?’
