FIFA launches first App for World Cup

FIFA.com has announced the launch of its first official app to coincide with the World Cup Finals Draw for the 2014 edition on Friday, and is expected to become the most downloaded sports application ever, according to the sport’s world governing body.

Over 70 million downloads have been forecast in its first few months, with the application built on the foundations of FIFA.com, the most visited football website in the world, which receives in excess of 7 billion page views and 150 million unique visitors during tournament months.

The FIFA app, which features a match centre with live coverage from more than 200 national leagues and competitions across the globe, will be launched this Friday to coincide with the draw for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The football governing body claim the app will boast thousands of goals, more than a million minutes of football each week and is free to download for iPhone, iPad and Android smartphone and tablet from today.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter, said of the announcement: ‘Our mission is to not only develop the game, but to touch the world and build a better future. With the official FIFA app, we are using mobile - the most personal technology ever known - to unite and inspire fans, ensuring they never miss a moment of the beautiful game.’

The live coverage of the Final Draw will also be supplemented by exclusive coach reactions as the groups and games are announced. The app, which will be available in English, Spanish, German, French and Portuguese, will also integrate social interaction through Facebook, Twitter and the FIFA.com Club, the global online community for football fans.
