Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, added $1 billion to his fortune on Monday, September 7, 2026, pushing his total net worth to a record $32.5 billion.
The sharp increase comes as global investors step up preparations ahead of the highly anticipated N2.2 trillion ($1.3 billion) initial public offering (IPO) of his landmark oil refinery, scheduled to open on September 14.
The one-day surge caps an extraordinary year for the Nigerian industrialist, whose wealth has risen by 27% since January, driven largely by growing investor confidence in his sprawling business empire, the Dangote Group.
Analysts attribute the momentum to the planned public listing of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, the mega-refinery located in the Lekki Free Zone outside Lagos.
Market expectations for the offering are exceptionally high, with financial advisers noting that domestic and international institutional investors are rapidly repositioning their portfolios to secure allocations.
The N2.2 trillion share sale is projected to become the largest equity offering in the history of the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), marking a potentially significant milestone for Nigeria and the wider West African capital market.
The 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery, which recently began operations, is widely regarded as a potential game-changer for Africa’s largest economy.
Nigeria has historically faced chronic fuel shortages and significant foreign exchange outflows because of its heavy reliance on imported refined petroleum products.
By processing crude oil locally, the refinery is expected to reduce these vulnerabilities, strengthen energy security and potentially conserve significant foreign exchange for the country.
Monday’s surge in Dangote’s fortune reflects the market’s confidence in the refinery’s long-term earning potential.
Beyond oil, Dangote’s interests in cement, sugar and fertiliser continue to deliver resilient performance, supporting his position at the top of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
With the September 14 IPO date approaching, financial regulators are reportedly working closely with the Dangote Group to facilitate a smooth transition to the public market.
With his net worth now at $32.5 billion, Dangote has further strengthened his position as Africa’s leading industrialist.
The proposed share offering is expected to attract substantial liquidity into Nigeria’s capital market and could further cement the refinery’s position as the crown jewel of Dangote’s decades-long business empire.
