The Federal Government has launched the Government Service Portal (GSP), a unified digital platform designed to provide citizens, non-citizens and businesses with secure, seamless access to public services offered by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
The portal was officially unveiled on Tuesday in Abuja as part of the government's drive to accelerate digital transformation and improve access to public services.
Developed by Galaxy Backbone, the Federal Government's central digital infrastructure provider, the flagship platform was delivered in collaboration with the Federal Mini
stry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
Addressing Fragmented Government Services
For years, Nigerians seeking government services such as business registration, tax filing, permit applications and official verification have had to navigate multiple standalone government websites. The fragmented system often required users to create separate accounts, repeatedly submit the same identification documents and make payments through different platforms.
Speaking at the launch, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Galaxy Backbone, Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju, said although many MDAs had made progress in digitising their operations, public access to services remained disjointed.
"Government should be organised around the needs of the people, not around institutional boundaries," Prof. Adeyanju stated. "By bringing government services together under one trusted digital gateway, we are simplifying access, improving visibility, promoting consistency, and creating a more seamless experience for everyone who interacts with the government."
Key Features of the Government Service Portal
The Government Service Portal forms a central component of Nigeria's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) framework and supports the implementation of the e-Government Master Plan 2.0 and President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
Among its key features are:
- Single Sign-On (SSO): Citizens can securely access multiple government services using their National Identification Number (NIN) or verified business credentials, removing the need to maintain multiple usernames and passwords.
- "Tell Us Once" Data Sharing: Through integration with the Nigerian Digital Exchange, authorised government agencies can securely exchange verification data, reducing the need for users to repeatedly submit the same documents.
- Unified Application Tracking: Users receive centralised reference numbers that allow them to monitor the progress of applications submitted across different MDAs in real time.
- Paperless Service Delivery: Integration with government cloud infrastructure enables end-to-end digital processing, reducing the need for physical visits to government offices.
Representing the Permanent Secretary of FMCIDE, Engr. Nadungu Gagare, the Director of E-Government, Mr. Johnson Bareyei, described the launch as a major milestone in improving public service delivery.
"Today's event is not simply about providing a digital platform. It's about demonstrating what can be achieved when government agencies work together with a shared purpose, making public services easier, faster, and more accessible for every Nigerian," Bareyei noted.
Nigeria-South Korea Partnership Drives Digital Governance
The portal is the outcome of a multi-year collaboration between Nigeria and South Korea through KOICA under the project, Building a Foundation Towards Digital Governance in Nigeria.
Ahead of the soft launch, Galaxy Backbone carried out extensive user experience testing involving 184 participants from different sectors.
The pilot recorded encouraging results:
- 88% of participants successfully located specific government services on their first attempt.
- More than 80% rated the platform as highly intuitive and user-friendly.
- 91% said they would use the portal for future government transactions, while 99% indicated they would recommend it to others.
Nationwide Rollout Planned After Pilot Phase
Officials explained that Tuesday's unveiling marks the beginning of a pilot or soft-launch phase, during which selected MDAs will onboard their core services.
The phased rollout is intended to allow engineers to fine-tune system performance, strengthen cybersecurity measures and gather public feedback before nationwide deployment.
Galaxy Backbone and the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy also urged all federal ministries and agencies to accelerate the integration of their services into the platform through application programming interfaces (APIs).
As more government institutions join the ecosystem, the Federal Government expects the portal to improve Nigeria's Ease of Doing Business performance, reduce corruption risks associated with physical cash transactions and strengthen public confidence through faster, more transparent and efficient service delivery.
