The Federal Government is advancing a strategic partnership with China to accelerate affordable housing delivery in Nigeria and tackle the country’s growing housing deficit through innovative, technology-driven and scalable solutions.
The development follows a high-level technical study tour to Guangzhou led by Joseph Tegbe, Director-General and Global Liaison of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, alongside a delegation from Family Homes Funds Limited. The delegation included Managing Director Abdul Mutallab Mukhtar and Executive Director of Operations Emeka Henry Inegbu.
The engagement centred on developing strategic partnerships to integrate modular and prefabricated housing technologies into Nigeria’s construction sector, a move expected to reduce building costs significantly, shorten project timelines and improve housing quality at scale.
With Nigeria’s housing shortfall estimated in the millions, the Federal Government is increasingly prioritising industrialised construction methods and international collaboration as part of efforts to expand sustainable housing delivery nationwide.
Discussions also explored partnerships with leading engineering, procurement and construction firms to strengthen execution capacity for large-scale social housing projects. At the same time, the delegation engaged potential financing partners to mobilise long-term capital needed to fund affordable housing programmes and expand access for low- and middle-income earners.
The meetings were facilitated by Joerno Conceptions Limited and the E-Link Group in China. The engagements were further strengthened through the cooperation of Zou Gang, Executive Deputy Director of the China-Africa Economic and Trade Enterprises Working Committee, highlighting the scale of institutional collaboration behind the initiative.
The move signals a broader shift towards results-driven bilateral cooperation, where technical expertise, capital mobilisation and policy alignment are combined to deliver practical outcomes.
By leveraging China’s advanced construction capabilities to address Nigeria’s urgent housing needs, the partnership is expected not only to improve access to affordable homes but also to support job creation, strengthen local supply chains and boost urban resilience.
The initiative also reinforces expanding Nigeria-China cooperation across critical sectors, with affordable housing emerging as a key pillar of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
