Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital has expressed deep sympathy to acclaimed author Chimamanda Adichie and her family following the death of their son, describing the loss as profound and unimaginable.
In a statement, the hospital extended its heartfelt condolences to the parents and the wider family, acknowledging the intense grief associated with the loss of a child and affirming its support during what it described as a deeply distressing period.
The hospital also said it was necessary to place certain facts on record, noting that some reports currently in circulation contain inaccuracies.
According to Euracare, it is a reputable centre for complex medical care, led by an internationally trained and experienced clinical team. The patient, who was critically ill, was referred to the facility for specific diagnostic procedures after receiving treatment over a period of time at two paediatric centres. Upon arrival, the hospital said its medical team immediately commenced care in line with established clinical protocols and internationally accepted medical standards, including the administration of sedation where clinically indicated.
The statement added that, during the course of care, the hospital worked collaboratively with external medical teams as recommended by the family and ensured that all necessary clinical support was provided. Despite these efforts, the patient sadly passed away less than 24 hours after presenting at the facility.
Euracare confirmed that it has commenced a detailed investigation in line with its clinical governance standards and best practices, and reiterated its commitment to engaging transparently and responsibly with all clinical and regulatory processes.
The hospital acknowledged the irreplaceable loss suffered by the family and said it would continue to offer support in any way that may bring comfort during the devastating period. It added that, as medical professionals, it carries the weight of the loss deeply, stressing that its priorities remain compassion, patient safety and the responsible handling of the matter, while respecting the family’s privacy and allowing due process to take its course.
The statement concluded by saying the hospital continues to hold the family in its thoughts and prayers.
