African Union Raises Deep Concern Over Venezuela Crisis, Reports of Maduro’s Abduction

The African Union (AU) has expressed deep concern over the unfolding political and security crisis in Venezuela, following reports of the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and military attacks on key state institutions.

In a communiqué issued on Saturday, the continental body said it was closely monitoring developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela amid escalating tensions.

According to the AU, it is following “with grave concern the recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, including reports of Maduro’s abduction and military attacks on Venezuelan institutions.”

“The AU reaffirms its steadfast commitment to the fundamental principles of international law, including respect for the sovereignty of States, their territorial integrity, and the right of peoples to self-determination.”

The organisation noted that these principles are enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

The AU further stressed the need for dialogue, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and respect for constitutional and institutional frameworks, emphasising cooperation, good neighbourliness and peaceful coexistence among nations.

“The AU emphasises that the complex internal challenges facing Venezuela can only be sustainably addressed through inclusive political dialogue among Venezuelans themselves.

“The AU expresses its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and reiterates its commitment to the promotion of peace, stability, and mutual respect among nations and regions.

“The AU calls upon all parties concerned to exercise restraint, responsibility, and respect for international law to prevent any escalation and to preserve regional peace and stability,” it said.

As of the time of filing this report, Venezuela’s Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court had ordered Vice-President Delcy Rodríguez to assume the role of acting president following Maduro’s reported detention during an operation by United States forces.

The court ruling stated that Rodríguez would take over presidential duties to ensure administrative continuity and the comprehensive defence of the nation.

It also disclosed that the court would deliberate further to determine the appropriate legal framework to guarantee the continuity of the state, the administration of government, and the defence of Venezuela’s sovereignty in light of the president’s forced absence.
