Genesis Energy has entered a strategic collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) to channel excess power generated from the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) into Nigeria’s national grid, a move positioned to strengthen grid stability, expand electricity access, and support the country’s energy transition.
The announcement was made during an official visit by the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, to Genesis Energy’s operational site inside the Port Harcourt Refinery in Eleme, Rivers State. The visit showcased the company’s contribution to Nigeria’s industrial growth through its 84MW clean power plant, the largest licensed private off-grid facility in the country, which provides reliable, sustainable electricity to PHRC. The supply has helped improve refinery operations, boost local energy security, and reduce reliance on diesel and inconsistent grid power.
The collaboration aligns with the Federal Government’s Power Sector Reform and Energy Transition Agenda and is designed to optimise generation capacity, enhance grid stability, and broaden electricity access nationwide. It marks a significant milestone in efforts to build a more reliable, efficient, and sustainable power system, while highlighting the importance of clean, locally generated energy in driving Nigeria’s industrial development and economic progress.
During the visit, Chief Adebayo Adelabu commended Genesis Energy for its operational excellence and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting private-sector participation in the power sector. He stressed that government funding alone is insufficient to close existing infrastructure gaps.
“We are ready to do everything possible to attract investors to support us so that industries, businesses, and households can have uninterrupted, functional, and reliable electricity,” he said. “We have put in place a comprehensive policy and consistent regulatory framework that ensures private sector investors can operate confidently, recover investments, and contribute meaningfully to national growth. This collaboration will serve as proof of concept for integrating excess capacity into the national grid and could lead to an additional 120MW expansion once the pilot phase is concluded.”
He further affirmed the Federal Government’s readiness to fast-track transmission infrastructure and commercial arrangements to ensure efficient offtake of power from the facility into the grid.
The 84MW Off-Grid Independent Power Plant (IPP) operated by Genesis Energy within PHRC remains the nation’s largest licensed private off-grid clean power plant. Powered by three GE TM2500+ gas turbines, the facility delivers uninterrupted energy directly to the refinery, enhancing operational efficiency and strengthening local energy resilience. It also illustrates the role of gas-to-power solutions in enabling renewable energy growth, with each 1MW of gas-to-power capacity creating potential for up to 2MWp of solar investment, thus supporting Nigeria’s Just Energy Transition and climate-resilience ambitions.
