Ghana has officially launched its first 5G network, aiming to improve network quality and expand connectivity across the country. Selected areas in Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, and other major cities now have access to shared 4G/5G infrastructure.
The service was deployed by Next Gen InfraCo (NGIC), a government-licensed operator tasked with building and managing wholesale 4G and 5G networks in Ghana. According to the National Communications Authority (NCA), NGIC’s 4G/5G license approval has paved the way for commercial operations.
Shared infrastructure for multiple telecom operators
NGIC’s license, granted under the Wholesale Electronic Infrastructure framework, allows other telecom operators to use its spectrum and infrastructure to provide retail 5G services. The shared model is designed to reduce redundant investments while expanding network reach nationwide.
Tenu Awonoor, NGIC CEO, said the launch marks Ghana’s shift “from 5G ambition to 5G execution.” He highlighted that the shared backbone is commercially active and ready to scale, supporting coordinated infrastructure investment that benefits the retail market.
Roadmap and targets
Ghana aims to reach 70% 5G population coverage by 2027, coinciding with the country’s 70th anniversary. While the commercial rollout was initially scheduled for June 2025, NGIC met government-imposed deadlines, ensuring the shared 5G platform became operational.
Licensed telcos, including MTN Ghana, Telecel, and AT Ghana, can connect to NGIC’s 5G infrastructure without building their own networks. This approach is intended to accelerate nationwide 5G deployment and reduce equipment duplication.
Access and availability
Although the network is live, Ghanaians will gain access to 5G services once telcos secure commercial agreements with NGIC and link their retail operations to the shared infrastructure. The communications regulator expects 5G services to be widely available before the end of 2026.
By establishing a neutral, wholesale 5G network, Ghana is laying the foundation for improved digital infrastructure, enabling faster connectivity, wider coverage, and greater competition among mobile service providers. The launch positions the country to leverage next-generation technology for economic growth and innovation across sectors.
