Los Angeles is set to make Olympic history in 2028 by becoming the first city to stage its opening ceremony across two stadiums, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium.
Scheduled for 14 July 2028, the dual-venue format for the LA28 opening ceremony marks a bold departure from tradition. Organisers confirmed that both iconic stadiums will play host to the spectacle, though details on how the event will unfold across the two locations have not yet been released.
The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, a historic venue that hosted the 1932 and 1984 Olympics, will also host the Games’ closing ceremony on 30 July. That will make it the first stadium in history to feature in three separate Olympic Games. The venue will also stage track and field events during the first week of competition.
SoFi Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility that houses NFL teams the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, will host swimming events during week two of the Olympics. It will also serve as the venue for the Paralympic opening ceremony on 15 August, with the Paralympic closing ceremony returning to the Coliseum on 27 August.
"The venues selected for the 2028 opening and closing ceremonies will highlight Los Angeles' rich sporting history and cutting-edge future, showcasing the very best that LA has to offer on the world stage," said LA28 chair Casey Wasserman.
"These two extraordinary venues will create an unforgettable experience, welcoming fans from across the globe to an Olympic and Paralympic Games like never before and concluding what will go down as one of the most-incredible Games in history."
In addition to its unconventional venue strategy, LA28 is reintroducing several sports to the Olympic program. Cricket, lacrosse, and squash will return, while flag football will make its Olympic debut.
The 2028 Games promise to blend legacy, innovation, and spectacle, and with two opening stages, LA is ready to show the world what it means to think bigger.
