Euro 2016 generated a €1.22bn ($1.28bn) boost for hosts France, a report by the Centre of Law and Economics of Sport (CDES) and football marketing agency, Keneo have revealed.

In spite of security doubts, over 2.5 million fans attended the games during the month-long tournament.

The study, commissioned by the French government, said fans spent an average of €154 per day during their average 7.9-day stay - with just over a third of that amount being spent on accommodation.

According to the document, the economic benefit breaks down into an organisational impact of €596m and a direct tourism impact of €625.8m.

A total of 613,000 foreign visitors are said to have attended stadiums and fan zones, with the UK (13.4 per cent), Germany (12.7 per cent) and Switzerland (5.8 per cent) providing the highest number of visitors.
